Alan Wake developer Remedy Entertainment has confirmed that CEO Tero Virtala has stepped down, effective immediately. The announcement came just days after Remedy confirmed that the studio's latest release, FBC: Firebreak, had "weak" sales and that the company would incur a profit hit.

Virtala was Remedy's CEO since 2016. A search is now underway for a new CEO, Remedy said, and for the time bing, Virtala will "continue at the service of the company" as part of the handover process.

Remedy co-founder Markus Mäki is taking over as interim CEO. He is vacating his position as chairman of the board and will be replaced in that position by Henri Österlund.

"I want to thank Tero Virtala for his substantial contribution to the management of Remedy since 2016. I personally thank Tero for good cooperation and wish him all the best for the future," Mäki said.

Earlier in October, Remedy said FBC: Firebreak had "weak" sales, and as a result, the company was booking a loss of $17 million. Remedy undertook efforts to help FBC: Firebreak attract and retain more players, but those efforts do not seem to have worked out like Remedy envisioned.

The game peaked at 1,992 players on Steam following its release in June but has just 10 players on Steam today. This represents just a piece of the game's total possible audience, as it's also available on Epic Games Store, along with PS5 and Xbox Series X|S. On console platforms, FBC: Firebreak is part of PlayStation Plus and Xbox Game Pass.

Remedy has a number of upcoming games in the works, including Control 2 and remakes of Max Payne 1 and 2 in partnership with Rockstar Games.
