Atlus has announced that it is moving up the release date for Shin Megami Tensei V: Vengeance by one week from June 21 to June 14.
While Atlus didn't provide any specific reason for moving the release date forward, it's worth mentioning that Elden Ring's DLC expansion, Shadow of the Erdtree, is also launching on June 21. So it's possible that Atlus wanted to avoid 2022's Game of the Year.
Shin Megami Tensei V: Vengeance is an updated version of the original game that was released for Nintendo Switch back in 2021. It features a brand new story route called Canon of Vengeance, which the second half of the plot changes drastically from the original. This new story route follows the Qadistu clan. Its leader is Lilith, a woman who is said to have been Adam’s first wife in the Old Testament. She later left the Garden of Eden and became a demon.
While game delays are common, moving release dates forward is quite rare. Baldur's Gate 3 moved up its PC release in order to avoid releasing on the same day as Starfield. Baldur's Gate 3 ended up receiving critical acclaim and was GameSpot's 2023 Game of the Year.
Shin Megami Tensei V: Vengeance will be released on PC, PS4, PS5, Switch, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X|S. In GameSpot's Shin Megami Tensei V review, we said, "Shin Megami Tensei V may be slow-paced, but its strategic turn-based combat and dark, foreboding atmosphere deliver a challenging and rewarding RPG experience."
