After Hidetaka Miyazaki directed the popular Elden Ring, Junya Ishizaki stepped in to direct the upcoming standalone spin-off, Neightreign. In an interview, Ishizaki discussed taking over for Miyazaki and revealed what advice Miyazaki gave him.

Speaking to IGN, Ishizaki said as Nightreign's director, it was his mission to "put my all into it," adding that he felt a desire that he's "just got to do this." Ishizaki was the one to bring forward the idea to make Nightreign in the first place, and it was his project to steer ahead.

"I realized that I would need the resolve to see it through to completion or see it through to the end," he explained.

As for the advice that Miyazaki gave him, Ishizaki said Miyazaki and other directors at From Software informed him that he "shouldn't hold back."

"So, on the day-to-day process of making games, something that maybe I would've given a pass to would not get through so easily as director," he said. "I'd have to be a bit more critical, put a bit more discipline on myself to really take a good look at these things and decide the best way forward for the whole project."

Nightreign is a roguelike-ish spin-off developed by From Software, taking players to Limveld where they will square off against a range of new enemies. For more, check out GameSpot's rundown of everything you need to know about Elden Ring Nightreign, which releases on May 30, starting at $40.

There are multiple different editions to choose from, so be sure to consult GameSpot's Elden Ring Nightreign preorder guide to find the one that's best for you.

In other Elden Ring news, Bandai Namco just announced that the game has cleared 30 million sales. Despite releasing in early 2022, the game was only just pushed out of 2025's best-selling games list in April 2025. It stands to grow bigger still soon, as Elden Ring is coming to Switch 2.
