Peter was born on 29th March 1932 at Longton Cottage Hospital in Staffordshire, England. He was the only child of James and Kathleen Manuel (nee Simms). He attended high school at The Perse School, Cambridge where he boarded 1946-1950. Peter graduated with a degree in Economics from the London School of Economics. Whilst studying, he played rugby for London Scottish and won an amateur golf competition at Carnoustie, Scotland.
In 1952 he served in the 11th Hussars based in Seremban, Malaysia. Following military service, Peter emigrated to Sydney. He married Marjory Bissett on 9th June 1961 at St. Paul’s Presbyterian Church, Brisbane. When Peter was offered work at the ABC, he returned to Sydney, where their daughter Wendy was born. In 1966 the family moved to Toowoomba. He worked for Shell as a pharmaceutical rep visiting farmers around the Darling Downs. In 1972, Peter bought a grocery shop on the corner of Margaret and Mary Streets. In his retirement, Peter enrolled in Journalism at the Darling Downs Institute of Advanced Education. Following graduation, he wrote free-lance articles for local papers like Queensland Country Life. Peter had been a playing member of the MiddleRidge Golf Course from 1966 -1983. He was a member of the Toowoomba Bowls Club in the 1980s and 90s playing in regional competitions and skipping Club teams. Peter was a local Justice of the Peace and a member of the Downs Club for many years. He also belonged to the local Stamp Club. Peter had managed to remain in his own home. He is survived by his daughter Wendy and grandson Oscar who now live in Perth WA. They will miss him greatly.
