It is with the deepest sadness that we announce the passing of Elizabeth Gordon Heij (1943–2025), a cherished wife, mother, sister, grandmother, artist, writer, scientist, and poet.

Elizabeth devoted her life to science, education, and creativity. A recipient of the Centenary Medal for her outstanding contributions to sustainable development and science education, she also served as a CSIRO Division Chief. Her distinguished career spanned Australia, America, and New Zealand, where she was widely recognised as a pioneering leader in botany and horticulture.

Elizabeth’s legacy of integrity, passion, and dedication will be deeply missed by her family, friends, and all who were fortunate to know her.
